American Retro Pugs

American Retro Pug Puppies

Classic pug charm, a little more room to breathe, and a lot more life in every step.

Our American Retro Pugs keep what people love about the pug: the expressive face, the loyal heart, and the comic personality. We breed them to soften the extremes that can hold a companion back. At first glance they look like a pug, and then they surprise you with a slightly longer nose, a slightly longer body, and a brighter, more athletic way of moving. This is not a different dog wearing a pug costume. It is a pug-forward companion with a more practical build.

Our Genetics

Every American Retro Pug in our program is built on a deliberate mix:

  • 50% Pug
  • 25% Chihuahua
  • 25% Miniature Dachshund

The pug is the foundation. That half preserves the round head, dark eyes, compact build, and affectionate “velcro” temperament. The Chihuahua and Miniature Dachshund quarters serve a purpose, not novelty. They add length through the muzzle and body without erasing the pug look.

Why This Mix Works

A short muzzle is part of the pug’s signature, and it’s also why many pugs tire quickly, overheat easily, and can’t stay as active as their personalities want to be. Adding Chihuahua and Miniature Dachshund in measured amounts gives the face and frame a little more room to work:

  • A longer nose for easier breathing and a more comfortable, open expression
  • A longer body for a leaner, more balanced outline than the ultra-compact modern pug
  • A look that still reads as pug, just an old-fashioned, less exaggerated one

Personality stays front and center. They are still people dogs: affectionate, funny, eager to be included, and happiest close to their family. What changes is stamina. The extra length in the nose and body helps them stay in the game. Walks last longer, play comes more naturally, and they can keep up with household life instead of sitting it out after a few minutes of excitement. That is why I call them a more active and healthier companion: the goal is to keep the look and love of the pug, reduce the physical limits of an overly shortened face and frame, and raise a dog built for everyday living.

What You’ll Notice

  • A pug face and personality with a modestly longer muzzle
  • A compact body that isn’t boxed in
  • Bright, watchful eyes and a people-focused nature
  • More willingness to walk, play, and explore than many flat-faced pugs
  • A size and temperament made for home life, travel, and close companionship

No two dogs are stamped from a mold. Every dog is a little different, as with any purposeful mix. What stays the same is the goal: half pug for character, one-quarter Chihuahua and one-quarter Miniature Dachshund for structure, activity, and everyday comfort. Pug at heart, built for a fuller day.

The American Difference

European retro pugs are often crossed with terriers. We took a different path. Chihuahua and Miniature Dachshund keep our dogs small, companion-minded, and unmistakably pug, while adding the length that makes breathing and moving easier. If you love the pug but want a companion that can breathe a little easier, move a little freer, and join you more fully in ordinary life, that is exactly what this mix is for.
